Photo Galary of the Greer Family prior to 1935

The photos displayed here are from the Greer Family.  The consist of Photos of Robert Greer and 5 of his six children.  Annamae was the oldest born in 1909. Robert born in 1910, Francis born in 1911 (deceased as a child) Alta born in 1915, and Cecelia born in 1916.  Emma the wife of Robert died at the age of 32 in Atlantic City, NJ from typhoid shortly after the birth of her last child.   Robert died of Kidney failure at the age of 48.  Robert died in Tunesia during world war II and that is where he is burried, Charles died at the age of 80, Annamae died at the age of 86, and Alta died at the age of 85.  At this writing Cecelia is 91 and still alive and well residing in Freehold, NJ.

The family moved between Philadelphia, Atlantic City, and Freehold, NJ.  Finally moving to Freehold in 1944 just before the birth of Cecelia's last child.  The remainder of the family stayed in the Atlantic City area.  Annamae acted as the matriarch of the family taking each child out of the orphenage as the reached the age of 14.  Annamae herself kept house for her father from the age of 14 until his death at the age of 48.  After Annamae married Willard (Jess) Shockey she brought each of her siblings home in order for them to finish 8th grade.  Education was very important to her.

Alta on a visit to see her family, she was not placed in an oprhanage as her brothers and sisters. She was raised by family friends and as a result never as close with the family as she wanted to be

One of the few existing photos of Alta that was taken when she visited the family in Atlantic City. She was raised in Philadelphia and had very little opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with her family.

Cecelia and Alta - one of the very few photos of the two sisters together. They lost touch for many years but were able to re-establish their relationship before Alta's death. They were 364 days apart in age.
